Desktop Publishing & Graphic Design Program

The Desktop Publishing & Graphic Design Program a sequenced curriculum addressing the needs of the digital printing industry. It provides students with technical instruction and practical experience in a wide variety of graphic applications, including entrepreneurial skills. The following information is course descriptions applied in sequenced instruction; beginning with the Desktop/1 & 2 courses and finishing with the Web Design course. Computer literacy is a requirement to enter this training.

Desktop Publishing

Desktop Publishing/1 70-55-70 $60

This competency-based course provides students with technical skills grounded in academics, practical experience, computer operating systems, the fundamentals of desktop publishing elements and principles, typography, features and functions of professional graphics software, and employability skills.

Desktop Publishing/2 70-55-75 $60

This competency-based course provides students with technical instruction and practical experience in job planning and development, design and layout techniques, resource management, and entrepreneurial skills. This course also includes reviews in grammar application, desktop publishing elements and principles, proofreading and editing techniques, and employability skills.

Graphic Design

Graphic Design: Fundamentals 70-65-50 $100

This competency-based course provides technical instruction and practical experience in the basic principles and techniques of graphic design, print and web typography, color theory and management, elements of logo design, conceptualization of images through sketching, scanning, rendering using digital imaging hardware and software.

Graphic Design: Digital Imaging 70-65-55 $100

This competency-based course provides students with technical instruction and practical experience in the use of a variety of hardware, software, and peripherals used in the creation and manipulation of still, two and three-dimensional imaging; and the use of electronic input and output devices. This course also includes instruction in resource management and a review of employability skills.

Graphic Communications

Graphic Communications (Introduction) 70-55-80 $60

(90 hours)

This competency-based provides an introduction and historical background of pre-press techniques and graphic design, workplace safety, graphic communications mathematics, art basics, design ethics, capturing images by scanning and downloading references, Use of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign to set up jobs to go to print. Layouts are created for 3-D displays, wide-format printing, and silk screen-printing applications.

Web Design

Web Design 70-65-65 $100

(180 hours)

This competency-based course provides instruction in basic web design using Adobe Flash and Dreamweaver and HTML/5. Design basics, capturing images by scanning and downloading references, and formatting for use on webpages is covered. Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign is required, as well as applicable design skilled acquired through completion of the Desktop/1 & Desktop/2 courses.
